Print Type

A painting inspired by the manananggal, a Filipino supernatural creature that is a type of a vampire, whose torso gets detached when flying towards their preys.

She is not the dark type tho, because I was thinking that, manananggals might not really be evil creatures--but are people who had good intentions and chose to defy the rules to serve other people better. They are often blamed for miscarriages--but I think, they might be herbal doctors who help women ease a tough and deadly pregnancy or even rescue women from abusive marriages as manananggals are known to kill men, mainly. Just a theory tho lolol

But yeah, this is a positive way of painting a manananggal, in this piece she is a symbol of your inner growth and learning to embrace and own the space the universe is offering to you. Personally, I have encountered a lot of Filipinos who think they don't deserve things, like better treatment, big opportunities, and shy away from the spotlight--because they feel like the world have only reserved a certain small space for them--this is caused by, I guess the term "Matuto kang lumugar" (Know your place)--a term which feels degrading. This painting is defying that belief--it might not feel like you deserve the opportunities that the world is offering you, but you do--because you worked yourself through it, you earned it—embrace it and be proud of it!

Be a mananggal, spread your wings, and don't be afraid to take up space.
